Glossary of Cordless Mower Terminology
If you’ve been looking to buy a new cordless lawn mower, you’ve probably seen a lot of new terms and have no idea what they mean. Just to make things more confusing manufacturers are always inventing their own terminology to describe a feature or capability of the lawn mower.
Well, we’re here to help. In the glossary below we’ve listed the most common terms used by Cordless Lawn Mower Manufacturers and described what it means.
Terms
The deck is the main body that houses the blades. The deck is most commonly made from steel or a strong plastic. A plastic deck is lighter than a metal deck, but not as strong.
If there wasn’t a deck the blades would be exposed making it would be extremely dangerous!
Sometimes the deck is referred to as the ‘Chassis’
Instead of collecting the grass, the clippings are chopped up into very fines pieces and returned to the lawn. This means that there is no grass to dispose of and clippings act as a compost for the lawn. This process is referred to as Mulching
A Mulch Plug is used to block the grass discharge opening. This allows the mower blade to continue chopping the grass into fine pieces and return them to the lawn. See ‘What is Mulching’
A lawn mower ‘Drive System‘ is referring to how the lawn mowers moves forward. All walk behind lawn mowers are either manually pushed or self propelled by the electric motor. Usually heavier lawn mowers are self propelled, while lightweight mowers are manually pushed.
A striped lawn is just that, a lawn that has stripes. To achieve a striped effect a lawn mower with a roller is required.
The collector or collection bag is attached to the lawn mower to collect grass that is ejected out of the discharge opening.
The greater the Ah the longer run time can be expected from the battery. For example a 2.0Ah battery won’t last as long as 4.0Ah. It is not true to say that a battery with double the Ah will last twice as long. The greater the Ah the longer it will take to recharge.
The battery voltage indicates the power of the battery. For example, an 12V battery would not have enough power to drive a cordless lawn mower. A 12V battery would be more suited to powering a cordless screw driver
A 3 in 1 lawn mower has three different ways of dealing with cut grass.
- It can mulch
- It can side discharge
- It can collect grass clippings in a bag.
A 2 in 1 lawn mower has two different ways of dealing with cut grass.
- It can side discharge
- It can collect grass clippings in a bag.
A dual port battery charge can charge two cordless lawn mower batteries at the same time. A single port charger can only charge one battery at a time
A rapid charger can recharge cordless lawn mower batteries very quickly, usually between 30 to 60 minutes!
Brushless motors are more energy efficient that motors with brushes. They also last longer as there are no brushes to wear out.
Nearly all cordless lawn mowers can have the cutting height adjusted. This is usually a lever that moves the cutting blade up and down.
A lithium-ion battery is an advanced type of battery that charges quickly, holds charge for longer and lightweight compared to traditional batteries.
When buying a tool only cordless lawn mower it means that it doesn’t come with batteries or a charger.
